Biblical Names for Today’s Kids
Lots of parents today are choosing Biblical names. This is a change from an era when names tended to be chosen on the basis of popularity, rather than for a historical or religious reason.
Aaron: The first high priest, brother of Moses.
Delilah: Samson’s lover who cut off his hair.
Elijah: The great profit taken bodily into heaven.
Ezekiel: Prophet who predicted restoration of Israel.
Gabriel: An angel, like Michael.
Hannah: Mother of Samuel.
Jacob: Isaac’s son. All Hebrews descended from him.
Levi: One of Jacob’s 12 sons, a tribal leader.
Luke: One of the four New Testament gospel writers.
Obscure Biblical names can be bad, though. Names like Jephthah, Hezekiah, Othniel, and Boaz successfully petitioned the courts to have their names changed. They said they took a lot of ribbing about the names.
