The first year of your baby’s life can be the hardest, happiest, scariest and best year you get to experience with your child. You are going to experience so many emotions during the baby’s first year! Luckily there are baby books about every aspect of baby’s first year, and reading several books while pregnant, as well as during baby’s fist year will make you more comfortable around your little one.

Everyone is always concerned with the next baby development milestone that their new baby is going to reach and if he or she is doing things at the same pace of their piers. In fact many new moms focus so much on what everyone says their child should be doing that they seem to lose focus on what the child is doing.

Then years later, you may look back and wonder what happened to that cute, cuddly baby you once had. While you were looking ahead, he or she was growing up and before you knew it that magical first year of their life was gone. It starts out kind of stressful, with the new parents not knowing what to expect next: from sleepless nights, colic, and spitting up to growth spurts, there is never a dull moment or a time to relax.

Before you know it those first few months are gone and your baby is sitting up, crawling and finally walking. He or she is talking or trying to and eating real food. The best advice I got when I brought my babies home was to slow down, to stop looking ahead of what comes next and to enjoy what the baby was going through at this time. You can never go back and get these moments again. So, instead of looking to what your child should be doing, could be doing or what is next, live in what is now and keep a record of it, for you and for your child.

And enjoy motherhood!

Parenting: Throw Out the Manual and Wing It

January 7th, 2008

Our parents didn’t have books or instruction kits on how to raise us. They simply followed their instincts, certainly made mistakes, but overall did a great job. There is too much information overload today advising parents how to rear their children. It’s not only confusing, but in some cases contradictory. When it comes to parenting, throw out the manual and wing it!

Becoming a parent can be a daunting and sometimes frightening experience. From the time the baby is born, parents seem to become paranoid over every little cry, cough, or sleepless night. It’s natural, but unnecessary. Having confidence in your ability to care for your child is the first step. A positive attitude follows. Showing fear or apprehension can be sensed by a child. Therefore, it is important to remain calm, clear, and somewhat impervious to the demands placed upon you as a parent. If you think you can’t do it, you won’t be able to.

While there are TV shows, magazines, and books on every conceivable problem you may face, ignore it. Your instinct as a mom is all you required to determine the needs of your child. If you make a mistake, don’t worry about it: learn from it. Use family and friends as your support group. Negative thinking or believing you’re the only one in the world who is going through a particular problem is fruitless. Children are much more resilient than you think.

While your parents may have handled situations one way, you have the opportunity to create new methods for dealing with specific issues. Don’t be afraid to try. There isn’t any advice in any book that can override your own instinctual feelings. Rely on them, trust them, and you’ll be just fine. Parenting is a learning process you need to experience on a daily basis. Your strength will guide you into becoming a wonderful parent. Listen to your inner voice: it’s all you need.

Expectant Mom’s Lifestyle Affects Baby

October 22nd, 2007

You’ve just found out you’re pregnant and you are probably thinking, “Wow! Now I can eat whatever I want.” While you may be eating for two there are guidelines which should be followed to ensure your child is born healthy and at an appropriate weight.

For some moms the way they eat does affect their child before birth. So here are some recommendations from pediatricians in particular and the medical community in general.

  • If you smoke, quit. Smoking can decrease a baby’s birth weight.
  • Do not consume alcohol. Alchohol consumption can increase the chance of birth defects.
  • Limit caffeine intake. Studies show it may cause miscarriages.
  • Drink plenty of water. This will lower your blood pressure.
  • A high fiber diet can reduce the chance of preeclampsia.
  • Consume plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  • Ensure you are taking all of the essential vitamins and minerals daily.
  • Increase your calcium intake with either low-fat yogurt or low-fat milk.
  • Exercise is essential in the health of your unborn child. Walk 20 minutes a day.
  • Keep track of your sodium intake.

While these are just a few recommendations supported by medical doctors, it is also important to have a balance within. Yoga would be a perfect way to calm and soothe if you are feeling stressed or upset.

In addition, when you begin to feel those pangs for sweets or foods you would not normally eat, have some veggies prepared with a dip of your choice. The dip could consist of your favorite yogurt then add a few herbs and you are set to go.

Today there are so many facts and information sites available online for moms-to-be, which can assist them in understanding the pitfalls of an improper diet during pregnancy. So too, there are wonderful online sites which explain what to eat during pregnancy and what affect certain foods and drinks would have on your unborn child. It’s worth the time to research and become knowledgeable in all phases of your pregnancy from the get-go.
