Newborn Constipation

24 Oct

Once new parents get used to changing diapers, they are told to keep count of how many wet and how many soiled diapers they change a day, to make sure the baby is getting enough food. But what happens when the numbers change? Or the baby doesn’t have a soiled diaper in a couple days?

It is possible that the baby could be going through a transition (food changes or age) and going less, or they could be constipated. Sometimes nursed infants will miss a BM because the milk is mostly absorbed and there is very little to get rid of. However, if the child seems to have discomfort trying to go, in addition to infrequent BMs, it could be constipation.

There are a few things you can do to make it a easier on the little one:

  • If you are using formula, try a different brand. Sometimes that’s all it takes.
  • If that doesn’t help, adding a little fruit juice, like prune or pear to the formula can help.
  • A bottle of water can also help, especially in warmer weather.
  • Change the feeding schedule a little, giving more frequent, but smaller feedings. It might help the digestion.
  • When you’re giving the baby a bath, fill the tub with warm over the tummy. Rub the tummy gently, as that can sometimes get things moving.
  • Feeding different solid foods can sometimes help. Avoiding bananas, rice and applesauce for a few days can help. Instead, feed them peas, pears, peaches, plums or apricots. Switching from rice cereal to barley cereal can also help.

Don’t try everything at once, though. Try one thing at a time, until something helps. If you are nursing, adding a little more fiber to your own diet can’t hurt.

While not pleasant, another option is using a well-lubricated rectal thermometer. Inserting it gently can sometimes help.

If none of these options help, and it’s been seven days, it’s best to call your pediatrician. They may recommend a suppository. They may also suggest adding liquid glycerin or flax oil. It’s best not to try this without consulting the doctor, so they can tell you the appropriate amount for your child.

Baby Sleeping Patterns

13 Oct

Getting Baby to Sleep Through the Night - If you struggle with your baby’s sleeping patterns at night, here are a few suggestions that may help.

Baby sleeping patterns can seem like calculus. We’re here to help! Read on for all you need to know about understanding and responding to baby sleep patterns.

Babies = aliens. Gasp! What a shocking thing to say about the a miracle of life but as far as baby sleep patterns are concern, they do seem out of this world. They can go from jumping, hyperactive hooligans to lethargic, dozy tots in a second. So here are some secrets into baby sleeping patterns.

The first couple weeks after you bring home your newborn will be hectic but truly satisfying. Your baby will no doubt be trying to adjust to a whole new world. Therefore, sleeping patterns will be upside-down. During this time, you’ll no doubt be losing a lot of sleep, something your baby definitely won’t worry about. He or she will sleep at least 18 hours a day, usually in quick naps.

After the first couple weeks, things should become smoother and ease into a routine. Yet during the initial few months, your baby will still be adjusting to a regular sleeping pattern. Don’t be alarmed if you’re up one night at 2 AM but not the next. Fast forward a few more months and your baby should settle into a wonderful sleeping routine. At night, he or she will probably sleep for 4 to 6 hours, wake up hungry and crying for a diaper change, and then doze off soon after.

Beginning the second half of your first year, your baby should start to fall asleep and wake up with your schedule although they still sleep upwards of 14 hours. Make sure that throughout this time, you and your baby are active and bonding closely. And if you’re still losing sleep, just think of the other millions of mothers going through the same thing at this very moment ;-) . Good luck, you’ll make it through fine.

Natural Teething Remedies

10 Oct

Teething can be a horrible time for babies. Not only does a new tooth cause pain and discomfort for your little one, it also can be scary to have something new growing inside their mouth. While there are lots of products on the market, such as baby Tylenol and teething gels, these products can be dangerous for your child. Before you go shopping at the pharmacy aisle, try some of these natural remedies to stop teething pain.

What most people don’t realize is that not all babies are in horrible pain while teething, they’re simply uncomfortable and scared. The option many people skip to cure teething pain is to distract the baby with a toy. Focusing on the pain can make it worse, so try to give them something else to think about.

Another natural cure for teething pain is giving the baby something to chew on. Pressure on their gums will not only feel good, it will distract them from the pain and discomfort by giving them something to do. Here are some ideas for what to give your baby.

  1. Frozen teething ring. While the cold helps numb baby’s sore gums, freezing normal rings can make them hard and uncomfortable. They now make soft teething rings that stay soft when you freeze them. Just be careful; soft rings can break open if chewed to hard. Make sure the ingredients inside wont harm your baby.
  2. Frozen washcloth. Just wet it down and pop it in the freezer. It has all the benefits of the teething ring, but it’s softer for more sensitive babies.
  3. Food. Frozen bananas can be something new and different for a baby that doesn’t want their teething ring. Plus they taste good too. Just don’t give a baby with teeth since they can break off and choke on.
  4. Teething Biscuits. While the teething biscuits that your mother gave you contain chemical you probably don’t want baby to have, they do make new organic biscuits you can give. Just be sure to check that they’ll dissolve in your mouth before giving them to your child so there’s no risk of choking.

If you’ve tried all these options and nothing’s working, don’t worry just yet. There are natural products and herbs you can give your baby before turning to medicines. Here are just a few that others have found helpful. Check with a doctor before giving anything to your child.

  • Natural teething tablets. The best one’s to use contain Chamomile for irritability and Belladonna for inflammation. They come in a form that dissolves in your child’s mouth so there’s no risk of choking.
  • Clove oil. This is pretty potent stuff; so you want to dilute it. Just mix a few drops with 2 tablespoons of safe, edible oil and rub into baby’s gums. The rubbing action will also soothe them as well.
  • Vanilla extract. Rubbing a little bit on baby’s gums not only feels warm and soothing; the vanilla also has a calming effect.

If you’ve tried all these remedies and nothing has worked, take your child to their pediatrician. A common problem is that parents may miss signs of an illness because they think the crying and fussiness is caused by teething. The most important thing to remember with a teething baby is patience. When you get upset and frustrated, you child gets upset and frustrated too.

Baby Colic

16 Sep

Colic is still a mystery to Doctors. They still do not know what cause colic in babies. They will tell you that there is no known cure for colic. I have always heard of colic, and heard from mothers that have dealt with this problem. I have never had to deal with a colicky baby, until my fourth child Nicholas was born. Colic is hard not just for the mother, it is hard on the whole family.

There is no tried and true method to dealing with a baby who has colic. A crying baby is the hardest thing a parent has to deal with. The crying will stop eventually. There are some things that you can do to help with these crying spells your baby is going through. Here are some things you can try that I have found that works with my son Nicholas.

  1. Try walking with your baby. This can be tiresome ,but it may be the only thing that works for your baby. Hold your baby with his/her tummy against your tummy. My son tends to have gas while he is screaming, and I have found that this helps with his gas, as well as his crying. Sometimes he even stops crying for a little while.
  2. Push your baby in a baby stroller. Sometimes this helps with my son. Take a short walk and see if it helps your baby to stop crying. It may not work, but it’s worth a try anyway.
  3. Rock your baby. I have a rocking chair my baby’s bedroom, and when I rock him he stops crying and most of the time falls asleep. I think it is the closeness he feels when I rock him.
  4. Put your baby in his/her car seat and take a drive somewhere. I have done this many times. This option may not be an option if you do not have a car, or it could become a habit. Look at it this way; which would you rather do; hear a screaming baby, or drive for awhile?
  5. I have not tried this and do not recommend this unless the baby is supervised by an adult. Many mothers I have talked to say this worked for them. Place your child in his/her car seat on top of the dishwasher or washing machine and turn it on for a cycle or two.
  6. Try singing to your child, or turning a radio or a TV on to music. It may or may not stop your baby from crying, but it could calm him/her down a little bit. My son calms down when I put country music on.
  7. Have your spouse take the baby for awhile. If you are the only person your baby will let hold him/her, try to away for a little while. Have a friend or relative help by watching your child for you.

Make sure you get some sleep whenever possible. I often have my sister come to my house and watch my kids while I take a nap. This way you won’t be so tired when dealing with a screaming baby all night. My husband also takes the baby when he does not have to go to work. It helps when you are not so tired.

Remember the crying will not last forever. Even if nothing works for you, there is an end insight. Before you know it all the crying that your baby has done will be replaced with smiling, gurgling, and he/she will be a happy baby. My son is now 3 months old and he is not crying as much as he did two weeks ago.

Baby Care Basics

16 Sep

During an infant and toddler’s first years, major developmental milestones are reached. In fact, at times it seems that babies grow and accomplish at rates incomparable to other times of life. During the first years of life a newborn will learn how to crawl, walk, talk, solve problems, express themselves and create loving relationships. Baby care during this developmental stage becomes increasingly important, to ensure that babies are provided with the optimal tools necessary to grow and flourish.

Perhaps the most essential and overlooked baby care necessity in early life is companionship. Infant’s minds and subsequent emotions and attachments form at a very early age. If children are neglected early on, they will develop self defense mechanisms to protect them from hurt and abandonment later in life. Baby care during the early years must incorporate an adequate amount of touching, hugging, caressing and loving.

A parent truly can’t spoil an infant. Infant care needs are perhaps the greatest of all other ages. Only during early infancy is a baby truly helpless; they rely on their caretakers to feed them, change them, love and protect them.

As children grow and develop, they begin to form opinions and preferences of the world. They start to understand relationships, and how their behavior affects the behavior of others. The more attention, love and affection infants and young children are offered early on, the more likely they are to form healthy and beneficial attachments and relationships with others later in life.

Naturally, baby care also requires that a baby’s or toddler’s basic needs are cared for. This includes the need for proper hygiene, entertainment, stimulation and socialization. Children who are raised at home exclusively should be afforded the opportunity to meet with other children to learn how to socialize and interact with others. Developing this skill early on will only help your baby to develop the tools necessary to interact with others once the school years begin.

Young children are impressionable and easily influenced. They learn from observation and often will take up the bad habits exemplified by others. Thus it is important that babies are exposed to caring caretakers early on, and proper role models.

Aside from the emotional perspective, babies will, of course, need someone to help change their diaper, feed them, bathe them and cuddle with. These basic necessities are often the first considered when the concept of baby care comes to mind. Baby care items include shampoo, soaps, diapers, wipes, and lotions all formulated with sensitive skin care needs in mind. Burp cloths, bibs, endless onesies, digital thermometers and rattles also often come to mind as traditional baby care items. There are even special nail clippers designed with baby’s sensitive and soft tiny nails in mind. Among the top items that parents put on their list of must-haves regarding baby care include the following:

Of all of these items, the car seat is perhaps the most essential. You won’t be able to leave the hospital without one. No matter how short the drive, a baby can’t be toted along without being strapped in an age appropriate car seat. Most babies and young children should remain in some type of car or booster seat until they are large enough to fit in a regular seat and use an adult seat belt. For most children this is easily accomplished when they are 80 pounds or more.

Caring for a baby requires much consideration and a few key items. Be sure to consult with other parents to gain their take on what items they found most beneficial during baby’s early years.

Baby Expense – When Money is Tight, and Baby’s on the Way..

8 Sep

As you probably know, baby expense should be high on your list of things to plan for, before the baby comes. There is no cheap way to have and raise a baby: it
Baby food – When it comes to baby food, a blender is your best friend: it will help you keep this baby expense at its lowest. Not only is it much cheaper, but it’s so much healthier!

Save the little baby food jars for quick trips, or special occasions, and give your baby pureed food made by you.

You can cook a week’s supply on the weekend, put the blended vegetables in the ice cube tray, for a few hours, and then place them in a freezer bag.

Depending on your baby’s appetite and age, you can microwave one, two or three cubes before meal time. It’s quick, healthy and inexpensive.

Clothing – There is no need to buy expensive designer clothing for you little one. Do you think anyone will really notice that your baby is wearing Tommy Hilfiger?

Babies look cute in anything: don’t waste your money! You can get most of your baby clothing at yard sales or second-hand stores.

Toys – they are big business, but you don’t have to feel pressured to get the latest and most expensive models.

My kids were happy with everyday items as their toys: empty shampoo bottles (make sure they are cleaned and rinsed very well before handing them to your baby), plastic bowls, plastic containers from food products (margarine, sour cream , etc.) that they could stack up, etc.

Also, buy some toys that will help with your baby’s development, are durable, and are age appropriate: a baby expense worth the money.

Wills – Get a will or update your old will. Name a guardian for your child and the trustee of your child’s inheritance (often but not always the same person). Without a will, the court will name these individuals and also split up your assets in accordance with state law which may not be the way you would wish. Please don’t try to avoid this baby expense: your kid’s future might depend on it. A simple will that includes a trust for minor children costs between $150 and $250.

There are several different varieties of infant carriers on the market. Selecting the one that is right for you will depend on several different factors. One is the age of your infant. Some baby slings are designed with newborns in mind, while others are better suited for toddlers. Some offer more head support while others allow baby to move about slightly more freely.

A baby sling will allow you the opportunity to maintain constant contact with your infant, thus further strengthening the bond between mom and baby. Studies have shown that babies who are carried around for longer periods of time generally cry less and are more content. In many countries where babies are carried for a longer part of the day, colic is virtually non-existent. Carrying your infant around in a baby sling also allows more time for learning, as visual alertness and quite alertness often increase as a result of carrier usage.

One of the more popular types of baby sling is the pouch sling, also referred to as the tube of pocket sling, where baby is carried in a semi-prone position. This type of sling often fits around one arm, with baby hanging at about stomach level. There are other types of slings that mom or dad can wear like a backpack, with baby nestled in either facing in or facing out.

Use of a baby sling is often more convenient that trying to carry baby around in her car seat. A baby sling also provides a neat way to carry your baby around if you don’t want to pack a bulky stroller. Slings can be sued to tote your baby around while shopping, going for a walk and even vacuuming about the house.

Keep in mind that there are weight limits on some slings, often children over 35 pounds are too heavy to be carried around. Some tips for wearing a baby sling include the following:

  • Always keep one hand on your baby when bending over or moving abruptly, to prevent your baby from mistakenly falling out
  • Be aware of your movements when using a baby sling; remember that babies can be bumped by doorways or sharp corners, always be aware that your babies head or limbs might extend outside of the framework of your baby sling
  • Though baby slings are useful for accomplishing a variety of tasks, it is not recommended that you wear your baby in a carrier while cooking. The risk of hot substances splashing on baby is too great.
  • Remember that older children might figure out how to climb out of their carriers, be certain that you utilize an age appropriate baby sling at all times.
  • A baby sling should not be used in lieu of a car seat or other infant protection device

Proper use of a baby sling can provide mom and baby with a fun and convenient mode of transport. There is definitely a variety of baby carrier available to meet every parent’s unique needs and styling preferences.
