The Art of Baby Wearing

11 May

Babies need a lot of attention and there’s a great way you can have your baby with your all day, hands free.  Imagine being able to cook, clean, shop, and play with your other children all while you baby is safely snuggled up against you.  Well you can do that and more with the art of baby wearing.

Most people have seen the large backpack carriers that used to be very popular, but babies can now be worn in lots of different positions using several kinds of baby carriers.

There are many different types of carriers that you can get.  The kind of carrier you want depends on how you want to carry your baby.  There are tons of different choices, so research before you decide which kind you want.

Being worn in a baby sling is good for your baby.  Here are just a few benefits your baby gains by being worn during the day:

  • Most babies cry less when they’re being worn; up to 50% less.  This is because they’re always close to mom.  They’re also constantly getting new images to process and understand, so they’re less bored
  • The constantly changing stimuli when being carried help stimulate your baby’s brain and promote neural development.
  • Babies who are worn by their moms tend to form a stronger bond with her: this is because they always feel safe and secure near her.
  • Being able to feel mom’s heart beat and body functioning helps the baby’s biorhythms develop faster.  This means they get on a schedule faster and easier

Baby wearing is not only great for your baby: it’s great for you too.

  • Wearing your child gives you the comfort of having them there with the convenience of being able to use both your arms.
  • With a baby sling, you can breastfeed your child without using your hands.
  • You don’t have to haul around and annoying stroller or car seat when you’re out.
  • You get a great weight-bearing workout from carrying the extra weight.
  • Being with your baby all the time helps you learn their normal cues.  Then you can anticipate when they’ll need to be fed, changed, or cuddled.

While baby slings and carriers are considered safe for you and your child, there are some precautions you should take.

  • If you carry the baby on your hip or to one side, change sides and directions regularly so you don’t cause yourself back and hip problems.
  • Make sure you’re using a carrier or sling that is appropriate for the age of your child and the way you carry them.
  • Practice with a doll, teddy bear, before you start carrying your child. This will help you learn to watch their head and to take other  precautions to keep them from being injured.
  • Don’t wear your baby while in the car: they should be in an appropriate car seat.

If done safely and properly, wearing you baby in a baby sling, or baby carrier can be a great way to bond with them, comfort them, and get all your chores done all at the same time.

Baby Backpacks – Can You Use One?

28 Mar

Baby carriers, also known as baby backpacks are the perfect solution for parents and infants on the go. I especially like these for kids who don’t like to sit down low in a stroller. Just put your toddler in the backpack and away you go – everyone is happy!

The comes with a hefty price tag – about two hundred dollars. That’s toward the upper end of the car seat price range, and can make a lot of us think twice about this kind of purchase. With a site like CarSeatPlace.com you can sometimes find it on sale, but it’s important to remember that even though the price is not low, the car seat is worth it. Our children’s safety isn’t the place to cut corners.

The is reliable, durable, and safe. You can use it as rear-facing or front-facing and it’s good up to 40 lbs or 40 inches, which is quite a long time.

The rear facing position is good up to 35 lbs and the front facing position is good from 20lbs to 40lbs. The car seat is compact and fits in many cars, but it’s important to check your car to make sure that it is designed to be used with such a car seat.

It is preferable to use the LATCH tether when installing the car seat. If your car is not set up to use a LATCH tether, then use a regular seat belt but make sure that you install the seat properly and securely. The five-point harness is durable and very easy to use. You should adjust it to fit your child snugly.

This seat is pretty light – only 14 pounds. It is also pretty compact – 18″ by 25″ by 23.5″. If your kid hates his car seat and cries every time you put him in it, you might be pleasantly surprised when you switch him to the Roundabout. If you are planning to travel you might want to know that this seat is certified for air travel. It also has a 1 year warranty.

The pretty covers makes this seat more visually appealing to parents than the endless lines of cutesy car seats, and it’s easier to clean, too. Just vacuum crumbs periodically and wipe wet spills down with a damp cloth. The fabric is soft and pleasant, not scratchy, and kids will fall asleep fast. If you’re tired of the usual run of car seat options, the is an excellent choice.

The Roundabout has so many other features that other car seats don’t have. For example, there are lots of ways to adjust the seat so your child fits in well and is very safe and snug. There are fabric guards that make sure that your child doesn’t touch any hot pieces – in case your car was out in the sun on a hot day. The hook and loop fasteners allow your kid to get into the seat without having the straps interfering with them.

If you’re in the market for a new car seat for your child, and you’re tired of flimsy seats, ugly ones, and seats that make your child cry, check out the . In the end, the high price is worth the comfort, convenience and safety it provides. You’ll be surprised at how much better it makes car travel for you and for your child.

Baby’s First Shoes

29 Oct

Any parent of an active toddler has asked this question: “When should my child start wearing shoes?”

There is no clear consensus. Some parents buy shoes as soon as their baby pulls herself into a first tentative stand;others wait as long as possible, preferring not to constrict their children’s feet.

“As a general rule, kids will need shoes when they are ready to start walking around outdoors,” says Peggy Wells, who is both a mother and president of Pip Squeakers, a children’s shoe company. “You will want something that protects your baby’s feet but still allows for some flexibility,” she explains.

For parents contemplating purchasing their baby’s first shoes, here are some suggestions for things to consider from the experts at parentsplace.com and Pip Squeakers:

* Make sure you get the proper fit. Shoes that are too tight or too loose could be painful or cause blisters, and may even hamper walking. Have your pediatrician measure your child’s feet, during the regular check-ups. This will provide you with an accurate measurement when you refer to a shoe company’s sizing chart.

Parents can also measure their baby’s feet at home. Measure with socks on, from the tip of the big toe to the heel. Toddlers tend to curl their toes when you try to measure, so make sure the foot is flat.

  • Avoid stiff, high-top leather shoes; there is no evidence that they help babies walk. Instead, look for something soft and flexible that allows your baby to use the movement of his feet to maintain balance and to walk. They should be made from canvas or some other breathable material, and have flat, flexible, non-slip soles.
  • Get shoes your child likes. Pip Squeakers shoes make a pleasing “squeak” that children enjoy. “It encourages them to move, walk and explore their surroundings,” says Wells, who adds that children enjoy creating the amusing sounds with each step. An added benefit is safety: the sound allows parents to more easily track the movements of their toddler and keep them within a close radius.
  • Safe closures. Make sure that your baby’s shoes fasten well. Double-knot laces so that they are less likely to come undone and make sure buckle straps are secure without being too tight. Velcro fasteners are the easiest option.
  • It is normal to have a slight discrepancy in foot size between the two feet; you want to make sure to go with the shoe size that fits the larger foot. Allow about one-half inch of space at the end of the longest toe to the end of the shoe. The toes should be able to wiggle freely, and the heel should not slip with normal walking.
  • Get the shoe that is most comfortable for your child, even if it is not the same size that the measurement device indicates. Be aware that sizing differs with each shoe company, so refer to their respective sizing charts. It is advisable to inspect the shoe fit every couple of weeks, to insure the continuing comfort of your child’s feet.

Because of their unique ability to make sounds, Pip Squeakers shoes may be of interest to parents of children with disabilities who may have vision or mobility problems. For more information on children’s shoes and Pip Squeakers, visit www.pipsqueakers.com or call 866-722-4535

Baby Products

5 Oct

Sifting through the piles of available baby products can often be challenging and overwhelming for a first time mom. Even experienced parents sometimes have to sigh at the sheer volume of baby products available on the market today.

Regardless of your situation, there are some tips and considerations that will help you sift through the mounds of baby products people offer you at every turn. First and foremost, consider the ages of the children you are buying for. There are several baby products that a newborn for example, will grow out of within just a couple of months. These include small sized onesies or newborn bottle nipples. Other baby products will likely prove more long lasting. These might include the infants crib, diaper disposal system and infant play-yard among others.

Diapers are one of those baby products that come in every size, shape, color and fashion imaginable. There are huggable diapers, comfort fit, super absorbable varieties and even those specially designed from preemies. One thing you can count on is your baby’s ability to outgrow his diapers at the blink of an eye. While it is good to stock up for the short term, resist the temptation to stock up too far in advance, or you might find yourself with a stash of too small diapers. Also consider “trying out” a couple of different styles and brands before you decide on the one that is best for you and your baby. What works for one baby doesn’t necessarily work for another. Some mothers still prefer to use cloth diapers. In this case, consider looking into a diaper service that will handle the cleaning for you.

Some baby products, albeit often considered “extras” certainly can make life easier for the parents of a newborn to catch a few moments quiet time. This includes a bouncy or vibration chair and an Baby/Infant Swing. Both generally can hold babies up to 15-25 pounds depending on the model, and thus should last through a majority of the first year and into the second.

Some skin care baby products are also available that are specially designed to keep baby’s sensitive skin from becoming irritated. Generally the less perfumes and other chemicals added to detergents, lotions and soaps, the better for babies skin. Some of these baby products are even recommended for adults that have sensitive skin.

High Chairs, car seats, booster seats, strollers, pressure gates, monitors and swings are just a sampling of the many different baby products available on the market today. Most now come with reviews as well, making the decision making process easier. Not sure what will work best for you and your baby? Check out the kinds of baby products other parents have. Ask a friend which products they felt were “must haves” and which merely made life easier. Undoubtedly you will make the decision that is best for you, but it always helps to have a second opinion.

Luxury Baby Gifts – What better way to show how much you love that brand new baby, than buying a luxurious stroller, or baby bedding, or other luxury gift?
