How to Prepare Your Children for a New Sibling

October 6th, 2009

With a new child on the way, you’ll have to find a way to get your other children involved in the upcoming event. This could be difficult in the beginning, especially for a first-born used to getting all the attention.

You can explain and talk about the new child on the way, but this is really approaching it on a logical level. Will your children really understand? A better way to get them involved is to create a journal that can be filled with information about them for their new brother or sister on the way.

You can purchase an appropriate journal at your local bookstore or find one of the many unique journals that have been created for siblings. Then fill them with information your child provides by asking them specific questions:

- Do you hope the new baby looks like you?

- Do you want a brother or a sister?

- What toys can you share with your new brother or sister?

- What do you want to teach the new baby?

- Where do you want the new baby to sleep?

- Tell your new brother or sister your age, what you do during the day and where you go to school

- Draw a picture for the new baby

Take a picture of your child while he or she is drawing the picture. Then include this photo in the journal. And what great fun you can have asking any prepared questions on a video or audio cassette while recording your child’s voice. Even if he or she is not speaking yet, it will be interesting to listen to the recording in later years.

Another activity is to plan a toy box for the new baby that is created by the big brother or sister. This can be a mix of their old toys and new toys that are chosen by them for the baby. An activity like this can help to teach them about giving and creating memories together.

Performing any of these activities will create special time with you and your child while you wait for the new baby to arrive. And after your baby is born, you have a keepsake that becomes the basis for sibling bonding for a lifetime.

The Best Baby Clothes For Sun Protection

April 16th, 2009

by Paula Heron

I’d like to start by emphasizing one very important point to remember – for babies who are six months old or less, please keep them in the shade as baby clothes are inadequate protection and you should not put sunscreen on a baby’s skin.

We all know how important it is to protect our adult skin from too much exposure to the sun and it is especially important that babies and children are adequately protected. One could say the Victorians had it right as it was unfashionable to have a tan in those days. But later, and before we knew so much about skin cancer and the aging effect of the sun, having a tan was not only considered fashionable it was also regarded as being healthy.

However, anyone who is fortunate enough to live in a part of the world that enjoys lots of sunshine quickly begins to understand the risk of sunburn. Everyday life means appreciating the necessity of using the right protection (for example, clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen) particularly at peak times of the day.

Particularly at risk are young children and babies. Their skin is far more sensitive than adults and it burns more quickly. So to repeat the warning at the top of these notes, please keep your young babies in the shade and not exposed to direct sunlight. Be aware that sunshine can reflect off other surfaces and use baby clothes and a parasol or canopy to make sure there is no risk of sunburn.

The most common misconception among adults is that covering up with a polo shirt or T-shirt made out of light colored material will give the required level of protection. That may well not be correct. The latest research recommends that babies and children get the best protection from clothes made out of dark-colored closely-woven fabrics, not the usual white or light colored thin shirt.

You should also bear in mind that the head needs it’s own protection. A hat with wide brims can keep sunlight away from the neck, the face and the ears. Damage to eyes can be avoided by making sure your child uses sunglasses.

Although there are more and more suppliers of sun protective clothing for children these can be expensive and there is not a huge choice. There is a product called Sun Guard which you add to your normal laundry load along with your usual detergent and it provides up to UPF30 on everyday clothing. It provides protection for up to twenty washes.

Clothes only protect so much of the body and it is very important to adequately protect the skin that is left exposed with a high enough factor sunscreen. There are now so many sun blocks on the market even ones for sensitive skin so there is something for everyone. Dermatologists recommend using one with an SPF factor 15 or higher for babies over six months old and children to prevent burning and tanning.

Never skimp on sunscreen for your children or yourself. Sunscreen should be applied at least thirty minutes before exposure to the sun and applied generously every two hours or more often if you and child have been swimming. Don’t forget the ears, hands, feet, back of the neck and under swimsuit straps. But remember – sunscreens should not be used on babies younger than six months old, instead keep them in the shade.

It is painful to see anyone, whether a baby a child or an adult, suffering from sore red skin or even blisters because of too much time in the sun or too little protection from sunscreen or clothing. It is even more painful to experience it and it adds to the risk of skin cancer. One immediate essential after an incidence of sun burn is to keep out of the sun until the skin has recovered.

Finally, remember that even though we benefit from stronger teeth and bones that the sun gives us, due to the resultant Vitamin D that is produced in our bodies as an aid to calcium absorption, we only need just a few minutes to obtain that benefit.

Hot Tips For Buying Baby Strollers

March 25th, 2009

Do you have a new baby and you’re thinking of buying a stroller? A baby stroller is a great idea, and makes taking baby out a breeze.

Modern baby strollers are manufactured with convenience in mind. Especially for parents of multiple babies, convenience is very important. After all you don’t want to find that it takes you half an hour to get baby and his or her stroller in the car before you even leave home, then another half hour to get the stroller out of the car and set up, and baby strapped in and ready to go.

What you really need is for a stroller to be easy for the parents to use and to set up and for it to be comfortable for the baby to use.

And you don’t want to pay the earth either. If you know where to find them you can buy strollers for extremely competitive prices. I’ve just been browsing some cheap triple strollers for around $200 brand new. That’s a top price for a triple stroller – if you know where to find them.

And modern strollers have some great features. They have larger wheels than in the past, so you can use them on uneven ground, they have comfortable reclining seats so baby can sit up or recline and sleep, foot rests that can be adjusted as baby gets older. And you should get storage baskets for your shopping.

But when you’re buying a stroller you need to think of a few things. In the past babies have hurt themselves when in a stroller, particularly when trying to stand up, so you need a stroller that prevents baby from standing up.

Many countries have stroller standards now that require certain features in a stroller before it can be sold. But here’s some good ideas for things you ought to find in a stroller before you buy.

There should be a good solid adjustable harness for each seat. Preferably a 5 point harness. And there should be solid brakes, capable of holding a fully laden stroller on a good hill, foot operated with one lever that puts on all brakes.

The front wheels should swivel if you need them to but should be capable of being locked.

And NEVER leave a baby on it’s own in the stroller unattended, even if strapped in properly. Don’t stop the stroller without applying the brake even of flat ground, and if parking on a hill park across the hill rather than down it. Preferably don’t park on a hill. And don’t attach a dog lead to the stroller as you may look away and find your dog, and stroller, and baby, have taken off.

There’s some tips on buying and using a stroller. If you’re looking for some hot prices on cheap strollers head over to my website.

EyeClops Night Vision Infrared Stealth Goggles – A Review

February 14th, 2009
by Linda Jenkins

EyeClops Night Vision Infrared Stealth Goggles are fun for kids and adults alike.

If your kids like adventure and exploring things, the EyeClops Night Vision Infrared Stealth Goggles are the right toy for them. This is a toy that uses infrared technology in order to allow you to see in the dark. The EyeClops Night Vision Infrared Stealth Goggles develop kids imagination, allows them to learn about different things in their surroundings and gives them a good time.

The goggles would be a gift idea for children at various ages. What child – or adult for that matter – does not like the idea of being able to see clearly in pitch black darkness? There is also the option of switching the screen from black and white to green by flipping a button that is located on the side of the goggles.

They can also be fun for hide and seek at night, hiking, camping trips, and a whole lot more. Vision range is about fifty feet, and there’s no glaring light the way there is when we use a flashlight. You can use these goggles during the daytime, too.

The EyeClops Night Vision Infrared Stealth Goggles come with a battery pack made for 5 AA batteries, safety power cord, and adjustable headband that allows them to fit many different heads. Made for kids eight years old and over, they’re a great opportunity to learn and have a lot of fun. The red LEDs around the eyepiece can be turned on for better vision, or off, if your child is enjoying sneaking up during a night time game of tag or hide and seek. Soft rubber around the edges of the goggles makes sure that they fit comfortably and securely.

These goggles provide a crisp, easily viewable image of even the darkest landscapes, but they should never be used without adult supervision. You might want to let you kids know that before you give it to them so that there are no misunderstandings later.

Regular night vision goggles start at about five hundred dollars, making the price tag on this toy something special. They offer real night vision technology at a much lower price. They’re also easily adjustable, though some users have reported lens fogging. These products aren’t professional grade, but they’re fun for kids and grownups, and compared to other night vision solutions, incredibly affordable!

Tips For Buying Cot Bedding

February 2nd, 2009
by Alice Ault

Cotton sheets and blankets are the traditional cot bedding choices for parents. Using cot blankets and cot sheets gives a parent the ability to keep their baby at the perfect temperature through removing or adding layers when needed.

Some parents even choose to make their own cot sheets by cutting and sewing sheets from adult bedding if they don’t want to buy those made specifically for a cot. For parents who wish to buy cot bedding there are some great choices which are easily available in stores and also online.

Don’t forget that you should use specially sized sheets if you use a pram, carrycot or moses basket. These are designed to be smaller than normal cot-sized bedding. Usually, you should begin with about three blankets and four sheets.

This amount lets you to have enough spare sheets and blankets ready if you need to make a speedy change. Sheets are generally made of the following different materials: traditional cotton, brushed flannelette (which is warm to the touch), cotton jersey or stretch cotton terry.

Stretch fitted sheets are practical bedding additions as they are not likely to come untucked during the night and are easy to remove on and off.

You can use acrylic cellular baby blankets, which wash well, rather than the cotton ones if your baby’s bedroom is quite cool. You should remember to check if traditional wool blankets you get are machine-washable .

This is because you will find yourself washing your baby’s cot bedding many times and having dry clean only cot bedding would not be very practical.

Cuddly fleece blankets, which are made from polyester, are also very popular and can be used in prams and strollers during colder weather, but be careful if you use them indoors as they can become too warm.

DNA Testing Has Different Faces

January 30th, 2009
by Patricia Denny

A lot has been made about the different faces of dna testing on television and in the movies, and while the forensics element of the procedure is one of the more valuable advances that the science has made, there are other areas where the results have been able to better the lives of people.

Paternity Testing

This is one of the most common types of dna testing and the variations include in home paternity testing and paternity testing before birth. While these are common procedure presently, they have evolved from earlier forms of techniques. There are various forms of the present day versions that have been designed to accommodate a variety of different needs but the results for court ordered paternity testing have a probability of 99.99% or greater for inclusion of the biological father and probability of 0% of the subject not being the biological father which is a 100% exclusion.

Other DNA Testing Procedures

Of course there are other methods where dna testing procedures are used and these include Infidelity testing. In our modern world the percentage of spouses and people in otherwise committed relationships that cheat on each other is high, and even the suspicion that your significant other might be unfaithful is enough to cause a serious strain on the relationship.

Thats where the science of dna testing comes into play again. Its important to know that traces of any amorous activity can be left on even the most common objects like gum or cigarette butts, and even more damaging traces can be found on things like bed linen and undergarments.

Semen can remain in the vagina for days after intercourse and even last as dried stains for years after contact.

Forensics

One of the more celebrated relatives of the paternity testing procedure is are the forensics variety. These are the varieties that have gained a more international following due to their high profile in crime work and as such, they have been instrumental in changing peoples lives. There are a variety of places where a good sample can be taken and these areas include common object like stamps, a toothbrush and even bed linens.

Its essential that you find the right facility that can deal with all your paternity testing and dna testing needs. For that, youll want to be aware of all the credentials that each place has as well as the paternity testing areas that they are familiar with.

Introducing the New Baby to Your Older Children

January 13th, 2009

Bringing a new baby into the world is a wonderful experience. It can also be trying and difficult if you have other children at home. As you prepare for the birth of your new baby, here are some things you should keep in mind about introducing the new baby.

Equal Treatment - It is hard not to constantly dote on the new baby once you’re home. Be cautious about spending so much time with the new baby that you inadvertently ignore your other children. Try to set aside special time with each child. Talk about their day at school, or extracurricular activities they are involved in. Spend your special time focusing only on that particular child.

Reminisce – Now would be the perfect time to get out the picture albums and baby books from your older children. Set aside a special day just to go through the books. Talk about how you felt when each child was born. Share funny stories with them. Recollecting fond memories will bring your family closer and will show your other children that they are just as special as the newborn.

Get Them Involved – Let your children be involved in the caretaking of your new baby. Give each child a special responsibility. One child might be in charge of gathering the diaper-changing necessities, while another is in charge of warming the bottle. Your older children can take turns feeding the baby. Let your children be involved; however, don’t force them to participate if they don’t want to at first. Sometimes it takes a few days for children to “warm up” to the idea of a new baby being in the house.

Be Patient – Some children don’t take too well to a new sibling but be patient and know that you are doing the right things and that your older child will soon come around. Eventually your children may even be such good friends that you won’t even remember this time.
