Let’s start with some details about how fat loss works. I find for me it always good to know the details Within each fat cell are drops of oil made up of triglycerides. These drops of oil are, essentially, the body’s fuel reserves. If you continue eating more calories than you burn, the body continues to store up the triglycerides in your fat cells.

During weight loss (which can be initiated through fat-burning workouts), hormonal triggers cause the fat cells to release these stored-up triglycerides. Then they are processed primarily by the liver to give you the extra energy your body needs to keep up with your exercising.

So for fat-burning workouts to be effective, the above cycle needs to be set into motion. Many sources claim to have the best exercises; in sorting through them, you can discern some common threads to put together an optimal fat-burning workout. Here are some ideas on how to get the most fat-burning out of your exercise time.

1. Intensity versus Length

Some sources suggest that a short, intense workout may actually burn fat better than long, drawn-out hours in the gym. This does seem like good news – many people are pressed for time, and a gym membership is not for everyone. For an intense workout that is reputed to burn fat effectively, try a combination of those old exercises you might remember from gym class:

* Jumping jacks
* Squats
* Running in place (vigorously)
* Push-ups
* Lunges
* “Iron Chair” or wall sit
* Reaches and side-bends

This approach is said to be more effective if you do not rest between exercises.

2. Cardio and Toning

Cardio and toning exercises are said to be a winning combination. Cardio exercises work large muscle groups and increase the heart rate and circulation, and target toning concentrates on the muscles of particular parts of the body (arm and leg curls, weights, etc.). For an effective fat-burning workout, try following 20 minutes of vigorous walking with 10 to 20 minutes of weight training. Or, after 30 minutes of aerobics, work on some specific toning moves like push-ups or butt-toning exercises.

3. Resistance Exercises

Interestingly, resistance exercises actually cause minute amounts of damage to the muscles being worked. As the body rebuilds and repairs this damaged tissue, it builds the strength and tone of the muscle. Lifting weights may be the most effective type of resistance workout, but resistance exercises are really defined as any exercise that contracts the muscles. You can incorporate resistance into your cardio workout by carrying or attaching weights, or add weights to your toning regimen.

Many families love to have houseplants in their home. After all, they add living greenery to your rooms, and many of them help clean indoor air. However, if you have pets and/or small children, they can be poisoned if they ingest certain houseplants. Cats love grass-like plants, and dogs may pull an entire plant out of its pot and chew it up. Small children tend to put leaves, berries, and flowers into their mouths.

Generally speaking, a rather large amount of a poisonous plant needs to be ingested for it to cause harm; but small animals and children under three are more vulnerable to smaller amounts of poisons.

Therefore, it’s a good idea to educate yourself as to which plants may pose a threat. Here is a list of some of the more toxic houseplants. If you have any of these, there may not necessarily be a need to throw them away or give them to neighbors without small children or pets. Just make sure the plants are out of the reach of your smaller household occupants. If that’s not possible, then you will probably want to get rid of them.

1. Elephant’s Ear (Colocasia antiquorum)

This pretty houseplant contains a toxin called calcium oxalate, which is a mouth and throat irritant. Depending on the amount ingested, elephant’s ear can result in significant swelling of the mouth and throat. Digestive upset from stomach pain to diarrhea are possible effects of ingestion, too.

2. Schefflera (Schefflera actinophylla)

This favorite of offices is also touted as an air cleaner. However, ingestion of schefflera can cause kidney failure in both animals and people. The resin that these plants sometimes secrete is also toxic, making it a potential hazard for crawling babies and dogs (that lick things up off the floor) in particular.

3. Oleander (Nerium oleander)

Not everyone grows this indoors; it’s most often seen outdoors in warm climates. But those who live in cooler climates do sometimes grow oleander in pots and move it indoors when the weather gets cold. Experts warn that ingesting oleander can be fatal to small children and pets.

4. Easter Lily (Lilium longiflorum)

Easter lily should be of particular concern for cat owners. It can cause vomiting and lethargy when ingested by cats, and may even cause kidney failure.

5. Dumb Cane (Dieffenbachia spp)

This aptly-named plant is said to cause a person to become mute if it’s chewed. This is probably due to the swelling and inflammation it causes in the throat, mouth, and digestive system.

This is only a partial list. Do your research and if you have these or any other toxic plants in your home, be sure they are out of reach of your children and pets. Or just give the plants away. There are plenty of beautiful plants that are safe for children and pets – so no need to risk their health.

Sometimes pets are brought into the family to help teach kids various lessons, like responsibility for example. For others, it’s just something they choose to do in order to bring some fun and companionship into their homes.

Regardless of why you do it, it’s important to do your research to find out what first pet is right for you. You’ll want to make sure that you can handle the amount of care and expense various animals require.

Here is a list of some animals that are considered good first pets in general.

Guinea Pigs

For first pets, many people look to the rodent family. There are lots of animals to choose from in this group – rats, gerbils, hamsters – many of which have excellent attributes as first pets. But the guinea pig has the distinction of being large (and slow) enough for bonding and cuddling, while being small enough to make for easy feeding and clean-up.

If you go on vacation, guinea pigs are not complicated to leave in the care of a friend or neighbor, and if you’re only gone overnight, you can safely leave them with enough food and water.

Guinea pigs do need regular exercise time out of their cages, and a lot of attention and “people time,” especially if you only have one. They are active during the day, which makes this a bit easier than for nocturnal rodents.

One word of caution about guinea pigs: some children and adults can be highly allergic to them. Spend some time (more than a few minutes in a pet store) interacting with guinea pigs before choosing to buy to see if this is a problem for any members of your family.

Gerbils

Unlike other small rodents, gerbils are diurnal (active during the day), which can be a big plus for those who want to play with their pet during the day and who don’t want to deal with squeaking exercise wheels and rustling sounds during the night. They are easy to feed and, due to their native desert habitat, are not big water drinkers. Therefore, they don’t urinate as much which makes for easier clean-up and less smell.

Rats

Although some may find the idea of keeping a rat as a pet a bit repellent, consider the intelligence of this rodent before you say no. Rats can be trained, and sources say that, if raised from a young age, rats can be affectionate. Training can include anything from tricks to coming on command. They do not require a very big living space, as long as they have access to exercise (wheels, tunnels, etc.) and are taken out and played with daily.

Rats are nocturnal, but they do have periods of activity during the day, and you can minimize how active they are at night by keeping them active during the day.

Ferrets

Ferrets are high-energy, playful animals that make good first pets for active families who are often home. They do need to be spayed or neutered, just like a dog or cat, and can even be “de-scented” during the surgery to prevent any smelliness.

They are entertaining and can be litter trained, but they will still need a large cage. You can get these types of habitats used to save money, and even a dog crate will do with a little modification. Another bonus is that people don’t tend to be allergic to Ferrets.

It seems like everyone is looking for ways to save money, and groceries take an ever-bigger chunk out of the family food budget. But you can reduce the size of that chunk by re-evaluating your food and shopping choices. And guess what? It can be fun! Here are some sneaky ways to save money on food.

Sales

Your local grocery store probably sends out a flier in the local newspaper, or they have them stacked inside the doorway of the store itself. Some stores post their sales online. Make it a weekly habit to review these sales. Then plan that week’s meals based on what’s on sale. Of course, stocking up on sale items is something that is within many budgets; but make sure it’s a food that is or can be preserved.

When you’re in the store, keep a sharp eye out for tables and brightly-colored stickers. Foods that are on the verge of spoilage, near their expiration date, or that have damaged packaging are often on sale for super-low prices. You may have to do a quick re-plan of your meals if you need to eat the sale item that same day; or, take the item home and freeze it or make something with it that can be frozen or preserved.

Coupons

Some shoppers pursue coupons with the devotion and zeal of the dedicated bargain-hunter. But if stashing perfectly organized coupons in plastic binders is not your style, you can still make use of coupons available online, through your local store, or in fliers. A word of caution about coupons – beware of changing your family’s food choices drastically to accommodate coupons. Many times, you’ll save more money by buying fresh, whole foods without coupons than expensive pre-packaged foods with them.

Whole and Homemade

It really is cheaper to buy whole foods and make your own snacks and meals than buying pre-prepared foods. Buy staples like flour (or wheat berries – which is even cheaper – if you can grind your own) and make your own baked goods; buy potatoes and make oven fries rather than buying pre-cut frozen potatoes; buy whole carrots and scrub and cut them; etc.

Even fresh produce is subject to expensive pre-preparation. Buying a head of lettuce and washing it yourself, for instance, nearly always costs less than a pre-washed salad in a bag. The same is true for pre-cut vegetables and fruits, and the expense is even greater if the pre-cut foods come packaged with dips or other flavor enhancers.

Meat

Let’s face it – meat is expensive, and adds a lot to the monthly food budget. And many health experts agree that it is not necessary to eat meat for three meals a day or even for one meal a day. It gets really pricey when you buy deli and packaged meats.

Try cutting back on your family’s meat consumption and try making things like vegetarian meatballs and black bean burgers. Beans are a very cheap meat substitute and can be used to make a lot of substantial dishes. In addition, dried beans do not harbor the dangerous bacteria that meat can.

Once you get started you’ll see how fun it can be to plan ahead and save money

There’s so much to consider when you’re having a baby, especially if it’s your first. You may have already decided to breastfeed, but perhaps your partner would like to help feed the baby, too. What do you do? You may want to choose a breast pump. If so, the questions in this checklist can help you decide which one.

How often do you plan on breastfeeding?

If you’re going to be a stay-at-home-mom, you can breastfeed at any time of the day or night. You may not need a breast pump at all except to express breast milk so your husband can feed the baby. A manual breast pump may be all you need.

If you’re planning on going back to work, however, you may want something that won’t take as long when time is at a premium. Since there are electric breast pumps that can be used on both breasts at the same time, this option may be of interest to you.

What can you afford?

Not all insurance companies pay or assist in paying for breast pumps after you’ve had a baby. Higher end electric breast pumps may cost as much as $200, or even more. There are also models you can purchase from medical supply stores and some department stores. Choosing which model you get may be as simple as knowing how much you can spend or whether your insurance covers it.

How easy is it to take apart and reassemble?

This may be one of the most important factors. It is vital that the parts that touch the breast are kept clean. If the machine isn’t easy to take apart, wash, and reassemble properly you may not want to get it.

Do you want electric or manual?

Manual breast pumps work well enough, and you may want to consider one – especially if your area has frequent power outages. If you’re not concerned about that, you may want to get an electric breast pump. Most electric models have a back-up of some kind, either using single use batteries or a rechargeable battery pack. You may want to consider the rechargeable model so you don’t have to worry about not having fresh batteries when needed.

When you’re choosing a breast pump you may have a number of questions. If you know the answer to the questions above you may have a better idea of which breast pump is best for you. Don’t hesitate to contact a lactation consultant or breastfeeding advocacy group to get help if you need it.

Breastfeeding is a great experience that mothers have used for generations to feed their newborns and infants. There are times, however, when you can’t breastfeed for whatever reason. By going through the above breast pump checklist you can make the best decision on getting a breast pump to meet your needs.

Finding the right pair of jeans is a common problem for most women, but if you’re pregnant too, then where do you begin to choose the right pair of maternity jeans?

Denim is very flexible; it keeps you warm in the winter and keeps you cool in the Summer. A pair of maternity jeans is a maternity wardrobe staple that can be both casual and fit for dressier occasions. Denim also can provide a wide range of styles. If you enjoyed wearing low-rise jeans before you were pregnant, you’ll be pleased to know you can buy this type in maternity sizes as well.

Unless you know the terms used by manufacturers, choosing a pair of maternity jeans can be overwhelming and confusing. They come in a large number of styles, shades and fits so it will be easy to find the best style for your body if you understand what to look for. A smart, good-fitting pair of maternity jeans can be worn right through your pregnancy to lots of occasions. whether you’re lunching with friends, having a trip out or simply going shopping, having a cool pair of maternity jeans to put on is an invaluable addition to your maternity wardrobe.

While before your pregnancy you only needed to consider the shade of denim or the cut of the leg, when you’re pregnant your biggest decision you will make is what type of waistband to select.

Most pregnant women pick between “under-bump” or “over-bump.”

Under bump maternity jeans are styled with a soft band across the front which sits comfortably under your bump.The band provides an easy fit and comfortable support during pregnancy and afterward. If you wear a top that covers the band no one will be able to tell they’re a pair of maternity jeans. So don’t be afraid to wear these for a long as you want after you’ve given birth.

“Over Bump Jeans” are designed to fit around your entire growing waist and consist of a full elastic waistband so that the jeans grow with you.Some maternity jeans have a panel at the front made from soft and stretchy fabric and which expands to fit as your tummy grows. This type of jeans are very adaptable and you are usually able to wear them throughout the entire pregnancy, making this style the most flexible choice of jeans.

If you are looking to add maternity trousers to your wardrobe then here are some further options. Side panels in jeans are a good choice for expecting mothers. They will still fit you when you grow sideways as well as in front. These side panels are stretchy and contain elastic so that they can expand with you as you grow. Many women, however, prefer the comfort of drawstring pants. These pants contain elastic in the back, but have a drawstring that can be tightened to fit the pants precisely to the woman. The drawstring can be a comfortable choice to last the entirety of the pregnancy as they can be loosened as the woman grows.

In the general population, more than 1 in every 20 people suffer from hemorrhoids. In pregnant women this number increases significantly. Carrying the extra weight of a baby as well as other changes that the body goes through during pregnancy cause the veins in the rectum to swell which ultimately leads to hemorrhoids.

If you are willing to make a few minor changes to your lifestyle, you can drastically cut the chance that you will get hemorrhoids during pregnancy. Through preventing hemorrhoids, you can save yourself a lot of pain, inconvenience, and suffering.

Hemorrhoids during pregnancy can results in massive pain during bowel movement. Constant irritation is another common complaint, itching of the anus, being unable to sit down and pain when walking, as well as bleeding from the anal passage. Leakage is also a problem whenever bleeding occurs as it can stain clothes and cause embarrassment.

Useful Ways to Prevent Hemorrhoids

Mild exercise during pregnancy (20 minutes per day) will help reduce the chance you get hemorrhoids by keeping your metabolic system in peak condition. When you have a strong metabolism you will be less likely to become constipated which is the biggest cause of hemorrhoids.

One of the keys to hemorrhoid prevention is to ensure you have plenty of fiber in your diet. Fiber softens stools allowing them to pass through the bowels with less irritation. Eating plenty of foods such as fruits and vegetables with provide your body with a high level of fiber.

Stay hydrated and keep your stools moist by drinking at least 8 glasses of water each day. By doing this you will greatly decrease the likelihood of hemorrhoids occurring.

You can never be 100% protected against hemorrhoids. Even by using the 3 tips mentioned above, it is still possible that you will get hemorrhoids.

Stress is a part of our lives. It’s unavoidable, no matter whether you are a working parent or not. That just adds another source of stress to what may sometimes seem an unbearable load.

Here are a few quick tips on how to deal with situations that commonly stress us all.

Avoid putting pressure on yourself - Don’t have unreasonable expectations for your life or career. When setting goals, take into account that Man’s best plans can often go awry. Don’t count yourself out as a failure if you’re behind schedule. Remain dedicated to your plans, while remembering that all things take time, and may require adjusting of the outcome or approach.

Organize yourself - Sit down with a notepad and pen, and list all your commitments. Write them into a spreadsheet if necessary. The sheet isn’t big enough? Maybe your load of commitments is. Prioritize the important and essential things in your life, and decide how much of you there is to spread around. And don’t forget to save some for yourself!

Remove yourself from confrontations - Kids or co-workers, the principle is the same. When your stress is at the point where you cannot be coherent, or deal with the other person, no matter how big or small in a reasonable manner, then you need a break to cool off. Explain that to your child, regardless of how young they are. Toddlers will be reassured that you still love them, and older children will gain an appreciation of the stresses of parenting, if you simply say that Mom is tired, and needs to think about this and come back to it when she’s calmer. Deal with co-workers the same way. Just say that while there are a lot of valid points to the discussion, you need time to organize your thoughts and ask for the opportunity to re-visit the subject at a later time.
