Inground Lap Pools For Excercise And Fitness

by Ryan McCall

When thinking about swimming pools, most people envision the elaborate design and landscaping associated with hotel and resort pools. While pools certainly can be used for recreational purposes a growing number of people are recognizing swimming for its exercise benefits. More and more pools are being built with fitness in mind.

A large reason why so many pools are built with fitness in mind is that swimming is a highly effective form of exercise. Not only is it an aerobic exercise comparable to walking or even running, but it is less stressful on joints because the water supports the body and reduces the force of impacts. To facilitate swimming for fitness, special pools have been designed, such as above-ground or inground lap pools.

As the name would imply, lap pools are built specifically for exercise in the form of 'lap swimming'. Unique among swimming pool designs, the lap pool is usually of a rectangular shape, which is different from the circular form that is often used for recreational swimming pools. Another unique part of the design of lap pools is that they tend to be much slimmer, often only one lane in width.

One feature included with several pools, both elevated and inground lap pools, is a current. In these pools, a current is added to the water, which travels in one direction. The swimmer, by swimming against this current, can experience what is almost an endless swimming pool effect. This both makes his workout more effective and allows the pool to be placed in a smaller space.

Inground lap pools can be put indoors or outdoors. Indoor pools are less sensitive to changes in outside temperature, but even an outdoor pool can be made to work year-round. Heated pools are popular in both businesses and homes, and make swimming comfortable no matter the season.

The price of a lap pool varies, depending on the size and included features of the pool. In general, the cost is higher for larger pools and increases further for add-ons like automated current or heating systems. Many people, when considering their wants and needs, find these additional costs to be a wise investment.

A conventional lap pool design is rectangular instead of utilizing the curvier designs favored by recreational pool owners. Plus, lap pools can be built as narrow as just one swimming lane.
