Lately I’ve been having a lot of fun looking over our photo albums. I guess that in itself is a monumental thing isn’t it? Photo albums. Seems most people just like to keep their photos in files on their computers these days. Now that it’s so easy to take thousands of them, many people do. …but I digress ;)

My kids – who are now 8 and 10 years old – LOVE looking at the albums and it’s been fun remembering the things they used to do and say and it’s reminding me of Christmas gifts they really liked too.

Early on the big hit was any kind of baby carrier – my babies insisted on being held so neither of my kids were fond of being out of Mommy’s or Daddy’s arms for long ;) I enjoyed slings and carriers where they were right on my tummy/chest for most of the day.

Then there was the baby swing. I honestly don’t know what I would have done without it. Well I guess I would have never taken my babies out of the sling actually but that would have been tough LOL! The swings allowed me a bit of time to do dishes or peel potatoes while still keeping my baby moving – my oldest especially did not like to sit still.

Once they were mobile, rolling or crawling, any kind of toy that was sturdy enough to help the kids pull to a stand was great. Mine enjoyed the Little Tykes Activity Garden pictured here – which we loved enough that I’d encourage you to search out a second hand one.

And last, the reasonably priced, but always a hit, gift I like to get for kids as they approach their first year is the Little People Zoo. Not only are the animals fun to play with but the animal sounds it makes are always a hit! Granted eventually I’d heard enough of the elephant but it sure did make the kids smile and it was a fun way to play “what does a monkey say?” and “what does an elephant say?” with them too :)

Okay, bear with me ;) You may be shaking your head saying “Crystal, you can’t teach them manners when they are so young”. But I strongly disagree. As I see it manners, like so many other things, are caught more than they are taught.

So at this age when baby is facinated by you and copying your smile and gestures, rest assured she is also copying your behaviour. So when you need to take a toy from her, don’t forget to say please and thank-you.

Let me also add that “ta-ta” is not the same AT ALL as saying “please”. It’s always seemed odd to me that people would be so sure their child could learn to give them something because Mommy or Daddy said ta-ta and extended their hand… and yet wouldn’t think their child could understand the word “please”. Well they can :) Of course they can :)

Similarly, when you give them something, encourage them to say thank-you. It will take quite some time before they can say it but I’d bet they will surprize you by how early they will try to say it… and it’s just sooo cute to see and hear a little one try to say thank-you :)

So you’re having a boy – your little buddy, pal, your man, champ, little guy, handsome devil. Don’t you dare call him sweetheart, angel, princess, peanut, honey or baby, right? Of course, not. He’s going to grow up to be a manly man.

Before the newborn son is shaving and off to college, let’s get through the baby shower first. Some obvious themes or décor for boys include sports – baseball, basketball, football, soccer, fire trucks, policemen, robots, doggies, cowboys or super heroes.

You won’t have a lot of frilly lace or dainty bows at a shower for a baby boy. You can never go wrong with anything in the color blue – and lots of it.

It’s a horrible experience for new parents to have strangers in the store refer to their little man as a precious girl. Baby boy shower gift giving made easy – give outfits to dress the handsome boy up in blue, blue, and blue. Even if his little sleeper has footballs all over it, the well meaning fan won’t take the time to notice the boyish pattern. Give them bold blue to clue them in.

Back to the shower ideas – generally baby showers are a woman dominated event. Your mother-to-be may not have much experience raising a boy. You could center the games on boy things. Make a list of questions that pertain only to boys – perhaps how to change a boy diaper. What will you say when your son comes up to you and tells you … Another idea would be to play – what not to do to embarrass your son (such as lick your finger then attempt to get the toothpaste off his cheek – in front of his friends.) Or don’t shout embarrassing honey-pie comments to your son while he’s playing with his friends. Do a football quiz. Mom may need this information some day!

Guests who have sons will be able to help with this one. Raising a boy is not the same as raising a girl. Have fun but make it informative and fun for all shower attendees.

Sadly, nearly every baby experiences some sort of sickness the first year of life. Some of the more common illnesses your baby might experience are the flu, a cold, an earache or stomach ache. For parents, it’s very difficult to see your robust, active and happy baby turn miserable and limp. Of course the first thing you should do is contact your pediatrician’s office or even urgent care or a hospital depending on your baby’s symptoms for treatment advice. Following that, there likely will be a period of time that you have to just ride out the symptoms and wait for the medicine to kick in and your baby to regain her strength and vigor. Comforting a sick, miserable baby can be worrisome and perplexing for a new parent. There are several things you can do to soothe your baby and make the experience easier for you both.

For a stuffy nose, nasal spray works to loosen things up but your baby probably won’t like the experience one bit. I use a tweezers to pull out boogers that obstruct breathing, done while the baby is asleep. Also, elevate one end of the crib mattress by putting something under it so your baby can sleep with her head at the highest part of the incline. Pillows are not recommended for babies under two, so elevating the mattress works and is a good solution.

If your baby falls asleep in your arms and you find it difficult to move her to the crib, sliding her into an almost sitting position in a corner of the couch works well to make breathing easier. The down side is that you cannot leave your baby unattended in this position, however it’s a small price to pay for a little break from a fussy baby. Warm baths are helpful easing nasal congestion so don’t avoid them if your baby has a cold.

Humidifiers in baby’s room also helps relieve congestion. Baby wipes are a better choice than Kleenex to keep your baby’s nose clean or better yet, rotate between the two to keep baby’s nose free of obstructions and avoid chaffing. Some parents use bulb nasal extractors but they never worked for me.

To relax and calm your baby you can try a gentle back massage. Also likely touching her skin with the tips of your fingers is relaxing slowly going up and down her legs, head and arms. On her face use one finger barely touching her skin going over her forehead, eyebrows and cheeks. Avoid this on the tummy or neck as it might tickle your baby. Gentle pulling ¼ inch strands of your baby’s hair, like you are playing with it or twirling it works for some babies. Don’t ask me why, but it’s a distraction I suppose for them.

If your baby has gas, position them facing down with your hand supporting her head and her body laying along your arm with legs startled on either side. The upside down pressure usually works to relieve gas and you can walk around with your baby in this position. The different view and position might soothe your baby too.
If your baby has a temperature, and can drink cool water (in a sippy cup) offer water frequently to keep your baby hydrated. Your baby will likely enjoy more cold foods than usual, like yogurt, cold applesauce etc., so offer them freely. A cool washcloth on her forehead will feel good.

It’s always distressing when your baby’s sick but hopefully by following doctor’s orders and using soothing techniques to relax your baby will help make a difficult part of parenting easier.

In a moment, your child can be taken from you due to a preventable accident. It is happening everyday to parents all over the US. Auto accidents claim the most lives, followed by drowning. There are lots of lesser know threats to your children you need to know to keep you baby or young child safe. Alive Past 5 tracks the tragic deaths of children under 5 and the causes to keep you informed and alerted to these threats so you can take preventative action before tragedy strikes your family!

With a new child on the way, you’ll have to find a way to get your other children involved in the upcoming event. This could be difficult in the beginning, especially for a first-born used to getting all the attention.

You can explain and talk about the new child on the way, but this is really approaching it on a logical level. Will your children really understand? A better way to get them involved is to create a journal that can be filled with information about them for their new brother or sister on the way.

You can purchase an appropriate journal at your local bookstore or find one of the many unique journals that have been created for siblings. Then fill them with information your child provides by asking them specific questions:

- Do you hope the new baby looks like you?

- Do you want a brother or a sister?

- What toys can you share with your new brother or sister?

- What do you want to teach the new baby?

- Where do you want the new baby to sleep?

- Tell your new brother or sister your age, what you do during the day and where you go to school

- Draw a picture for the new baby

Take a picture of your child while he or she is drawing the picture. Then include this photo in the journal. And what great fun you can have asking any prepared questions on a video or audio cassette while recording your child’s voice. Even if he or she is not speaking yet, it will be interesting to listen to the recording in later years.

Another activity is to plan a toy box for the new baby that is created by the big brother or sister. This can be a mix of their old toys and new toys that are chosen by them for the baby. An activity like this can help to teach them about giving and creating memories together.

Performing any of these activities will create special time with you and your child while you wait for the new baby to arrive. And after your baby is born, you have a keepsake that becomes the basis for sibling bonding for a lifetime.

Most mothers know that breastfeeding is the most natural and healthy option for their baby. The problem is that nowadays mothers need to work, shop, take their other children places, and do a thousand other things; it’s hard to always be in a private area when your baby is hungry. Social norms make many women feel wrong feeding their children in public areas, but don’t let this stop you. There are several steps you can take to be discrete about feeding your child. You should also not let people stop you from doing what’s best for your children.

You have every right to breast feed in public. In fact, many areas have laws protecting breastfeeding mothers. However, you should take steps to respect the wishes of others and be discrete. Since many places haven’t yet set aside areas for private breast feeding, you may have to be creative.

Here are some tips for discrete feeding:

  • Wear clothing designed for breast feeding.
While they make special clothing just for this purpose, or you can improvise or modify clothes yourself.
  • If possible, find a secluded area.
If you can find a spare chair, that’s great. A spare dressing room or hidden corner is even better. If you are in a restaurant, you can ask to be seated in a confined area or simply be seated near a wall and face your back to the crowd. If you can’t find anywhere else, you can always head to your car if you have one.
  • Use a cover like these from eBay:

While many women use a baby blanket, you can be even more discrete by wearing a jacket or large shawl to cover your baby. Practice. While it may seem silly, the best way to learn to breastfeed your child in public is to practice in front of a mirror while feeding at home. Try different positions and different coverings. This will help you know which positions are the best for feeding without showing too much.

  • Ask for somewhere private.
If you need to breastfeed at work, it’s not unreasonable to ask for somewhere to do it. Many employers would rather you feed in a break room or secluded area rather than in the middle of the office. You can also look into laws in your area related to workplace breastfeeding.

While it’s normal to want to be respectful of other people, you do have
rights. There are certain things you should never do.

  • Never feed your baby in a restroom stall.
Outer sitting areas in restrooms are fine. They are generally more comfortable for you and your baby; however, the actual restroom is not. Bathrooms are dirty and usually have an unpleasant smell. Adults don’t have to eat in restroom stalls, neither should your child.
  • Don’t let people intimidate you.
No matter how discrete you are, it’s inevitable that someone will still be offended that you choose to breastfeed. Inform people politely that you have a legal right to feed your baby in public. If you feel inclined, you can also add some of the damaging effects bottle feeding has on children. If you feel uncomfortable saying things to strangers, there are breastfeeding rights groups that can provide you with cards to hand out to people who object.

Breastfeeding may be difficult, especially when you need to be in public, but keep in mind that it’s the best option for having a happy, healthy baby. And if it feels right for you and your baby then trust your instincts.

One of the newest trends in parenting is baby sign language. People in the deaf community have known for years that babies could communicate through sign long before their vocal cords allow them to speak, but the trend didn’t really catch on because of the false assumption that signing led to later verbal language development. We now know that not only does signing not keep a baby from talking; it actually helps them to start talking sooner and have better language skills. [read more below]

By using sign, children learn how to express themselves with words, and some will even start to put words together in sentences before they turn one. Sign is also great for relieving some of the frustration you and your child face because they can tell you exactly what they want. This is especially helpful if your child is ill. Imagine a child under a year being able to tell you not only that they’re in pain, but where it hurts.

Before you start teaching your baby to sign, you should decide what signs to use. While the logical choice would be American Sign Language, some people discourage this because the signs are too complicated for developing hands and fingers. If you want to use simpler signs, there are books and videos with signs that are easier for babies to perform. Or you can make up your own signs, whatever works best for you. Just be careful with non-ASL signs. Some parent’s have unknowingly taught their children to use offensive language and been very embarrassed later on. Even if you use a sign from a baby sign book, that doesn’t mean you’re safe. It’s best to check with someone who knows ASL before teaching a new sign to your child.

Once you’ve decided what signs you are going to use, you need to take the time to learn them. If you do decide to use ASL, there are many resources online to learn from. Not only are their online ASL dictionaries; there are also specific resources that include only signs babies will need. They even have videos so you know you’re doing them right. To learn the signs, you may want to start using them even before your child is ready. This way you’ll be in practice when they are. The important part is to be consistent. Once you choose a sign, stick with it. And use it whenever the baby is in the room. That way, they think it is a normal part of communication.

Teaching a child sign language takes a little time, but is fairly simple. If you use hand signs, you can start around 7 to 8 months; however signs involving the lips and tongue can be taught starting at birth. You can teach your child to stick out their tongue for pacifier, or purse their lips if they want milk. To teach a sign, simply make the sign or facial expression every time you use a word. To keep your child from getting confused, teach them one word at a time. Once they’re successfully using that word, add another. Since this process might go slowly, teach them the most important words first, like: milk, wet (diaper), and ow (pain). These will also be the most useful words to you.
